A RESOLUTION TO TIIE FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF CONGRESSWOMAN
PATSY TAI~EMOTO MIND EXPRESSING CONDOLENCES AND GRATITUDE
FOIZ A LONG, PATIIDI2EAI~ING AND DISTINGUISIIED LEGISLATIVE CAREER
SERVING TIIE PEOPLE OF IIAWAI`I AND OUR NATION
WIIEREAS, U.S. Representative Patsy Takemoto Mink, following a seminal political career as a
territorial and state legislator, Honolulu city councilwoman, appointed assistant secretary of state, and
twelve-term member of Congress, passed away on September 28, 2002 at the age of 74; and
WIIEREAS, Representative Patsy Mink's public life spanned half a century and lent vigor, spirit
and critical legislative definition to the principles of social justice, gender equity, labor rights, educational
opportunity, environmental protection and world peace; and
WIIEREAS, Patsy Mink, born in the plantation town of Paia, Maui broke historic ethnic and
gender barriers throughout a remarkable career of firsts - as the first Asian-American woman to practice
law in Hawaii (1953), win election to the Territorial House of Representatives (1956), and serve in the
House of Representatives of the United States Congress (1964); and
WIIEREAS, in 1972 Patsy Mink played a key role in the passage of federal Title IX legislation
that prohibited gender discrimination in federally-funded institutions, thereby creating a new era of
opportunity for American women to participate in collegiate sports and fully experience the joy of
athletic competition; and
WIIEREAS, Patsy Mink's career was marked by academic excellence, an unwavering standard
of personal ethics, a tireless work ethic, a rich legacy of mentoring staff and interns, and legendary
attentiveness to the needs and inquiries of her constituents in Hawai`i's 2"d Congressional District; and
WIIEREAS, for her passion for justice, her abiding commitment to the principles of the
Democratic Party, her indomitable spirit, her many kindnesses extended to untold numbers of people
throughout Hawaii, Patsy Takemoto Mink will be warmly remembered and honored in the pantheon of
Hawai`i's modern-day leaders.
NOW, TIIEREFORE, PE IT RESOLVED BY TIIE COUNCIL OF TIIE COUNTY OF
IIAWAI`I that the Council extends its heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Mink's devoted husband, John
Mink, and daughter, Gwendolyn Mink, and to the many friends and associates of Mrs. Mink for their
loss of a beloved friend and honored colleague, and directs the Clerk of the County of Hawaii to remit
true copies of this resolution to John Mink and Gwendolyn Mink.
BE IT FUIaT1EIEIa RESOLVED that the Hawaii County Council, in concert with the fond
regard and respect of so many people throughout Hawaii, expresses its deepest gratitude to Patsy
Takemoto Mink for her brave and remarkable life, for her many legislative contributions to further
equality and opportunity for all citizens, for her absolute fidelity to democratic ideals, and for her
inspired example of public service to the people of I-[awai`i and the United States of America.
