I am Sally Ancheta, Hawaii Island Program Coordinator with the American
Lung Association of Hawaii. The American Lung Association of Hawaii
(Ai~H) believes that alt p~eopte should be protected from environmental
tobacco smoke (ImTS) in public places and workplaces.
Secondhand smoke is a mixture of the sm®ke given off by the burning
end of a cigarette, pipe or cigar and the smoke exhaled from the lungs of
sst~okers. Secondhand smoke is estimated to cause 3,000 lung cancer
deaths annually.
Children are esp~cialEy susceptible: their tongs are still developing and
childhood exposure to secondhand smoke results In decreased lung
function. Children who breathe secondhand smoke are more likely to
develop asthma, the leading serious chronic childh®od disease in the US.
Nearly 200,000 people in Hawaii suffer from lung ailments, such as
asthma, allergies and lung disease. About 100,000 people sa~ffer with
asthma and allergies and when exposed t4 IBS individuals begin to
cough, wheeze, and/or in the extreme, lead to suffocation dose [o
coughing spasms, Of those 100,000 people, nearly half, over 40,000 of
them are children.

secondhand smoke are more Ukely to suffer frorr~ bronchitis and
pneumonia, wheezing and coughing spells, ear infections, and more
frequent arad severe asthma attacks, The Lung Association is Vary
cvr~cerr~ed about the patrons who breathe in the secondhand smoke.
The American Lung Association of Hawaii hopes the iiawaii County council
will extend the smoke-free workplace law to allow all w®rkers t® mvork in a
healthy environment. Hawaii's health and wellness is in your hand.
