t am Salty Ancheta, ~tawaii (stand grogram Coordinator with the
American Lung Association of Hawaii. The American Lung Association
of Ha\rvaii (AL.~?l*i) believes that all people should be protected from
environmental tobacco smoke (~1`S) in public places and workplaces.
ETS is more than an unpleasant by product of cigarette smoking.
Scientific evidence indicates that nonsmokers become seriously ill or
die because of exposure to STS. people are harmed by even brief
exposure to passive smoke, according to a study published in July
ZOOM in the Jourr~at of the American tVl'edicat Association.
The anatomy of a cigarette include ~0 percent tobacco and 60 percent
poison. I~oison found in a common cigarette include but are not limited
to: Carbon ~ortaxide, 3diootarte, Arnraaorraa, Arser~rc, St~tar~e, °~otcee~,
Acetone, Formaldehyde, and many others. it is irresponsible to expose
adults as well as children to s+~ch chemicals.
(dearly 200,000 people in Hawaii suffer from lung ailments, such as
asthma, allergies and lung disease. About 100,000 people suffer with
asthma and allergies and when exposed to ETS individuals begin to
cough, wheeze, and/or in the extreme, lead to suffocation due to
coughing spasms. Cf those 100,000 people, nearly half, over X0,000
of them are children.
~r~vsros~mental grotectiost Agency found that children who breathe
secondhand smoke are more Bikely to suffer from bronchitis and
~pneurn®nia, v~vheing and coughing spe9Bs, ear infect9®ns, and more
frequent and severe asthma attackso The Lung Association is very
concerned about the patrons who breathe in the secondhand smoke.
All workers deserve the right to be protected from ~1°S. fihe Honolulu
Advertiser noted in their June 8~' 1995 l=ditorial that, allAost responsible
smokers acknowledge they have no right to expose nonsmokers to
their habit.° This ban would simply extend that thinking.
As for an economic impact on the bcrsinesses affected from bill no.

A smoke-free establishment will attract the health-minded professional ~ 8
people that live in our communities and their families, ®n a personal ~ ~
note, as an asthmatic professional, 1 do not frequent establishments ~ ~ ~
that allow smokino. I need to protect my lung health. and the health of
n,y children. 4~iovor can I conscientiously expose nny eve and toneo year
old to tfie harmful poisons found in cigarettes? T`o do so is to be
negligent as a parent.
Elie Ar~nerican Lung Association of Hawaii hopes the f°da~neaii County
Council will extend the smoke-free workplace laver to allow al! workers
to onaor4c in a 4~eaithy environment. t~arnrau's 4~ea4th and vve44ness is ir7
