TO: HAWAII COUNTY COUNCIL IN REGARDS TO BILL 260 RELATING TO
SMOKING BAN.
Sept. 24, 2002
As a facilitator of smoking cessation for the past four years,,,it is my
conviction ~liat the ban of sii~oking in restaurants and bars can only
support -flee efforts of the state and nation in developing an educated
awareness of the severe and immediate health risks of cigarettes.
In the foar years: of my work, I have observed a growing social distaste and
negative impression of °'smoking" and of those who do.
Ultimately this growing population wide attitude will increase those
numbers of smokers attempting to quit a serios but beatable addiction.
As this perception becomes pervasive,,,it can only have a "peer pressure"
effect on those adolescents and teens who begn the habit and
Spend alifetime-compromised. When "cigarette smoking"becomes a social
negative,,,those who smoke will increasingly become the
minority.
Sincerely,
Sari Lassiter
