of your staff regarding the proposed irradiation facility to
treat Big Island tropical fruits.
Now that the Council has approved $2 million for this
initiative, it seems clear that the irradiation facility will go
forward. I believe that every effort must be made to ensure that
the facility meets the highest safety standards. The nuclear
materials used for irradiation pose a significant environmental
hazard if they are not contained, handled and disposed of
properly. Any nuclear contamination could significantly harm the
island's economy. All parties have an interest in making certain
that a Big Island irradiation facility meets the highest safety
standards.
