(glass, metal, plastics, greenwaste, paper fiber, other) The advantage of a mass-burn style waste-to-energy system is that it is capable of processing all types of municipal, commercial and light industrial wastes. However, recyclables can be removed on the front end and ferrous metals can be removed from the ash stream on the back-end if desired. What components of the waste stream will you not process? The Barlow process will not be capable of processing oversize and bulky materials that cannot be fed into the combustion chamber, nor will it handle construction and demolition (C&D) materials. What percentage of the waste stream will you divert from landfilling? 90% by volume What is the composition of any residue (in tons and as a percentage of total MSW)? The residue is made up of combustion ash and fly ash from the air pollution control system. The U.S. EPA has stated that ash from a modern waste-to-energy facility is non-hazardous and safe for land filling. After processing it is 10% by volume of the MSW waste stream. Is the technology scaleable? Yes, the Barlow technology is scalable from 100 - 400 TPD per train. Facility's can then be designed (or expanded at a later date) to include multiple trains to handle larger waste streams. What is the minimum tonnage you can process daily? The Barlow system can be scaled down to process as little as 100 tons per day per train. What is the maximum tonnage you can process daily? The Barlow system can be scaled up to process as much as 400 tons per day per train. Capital costs: Capital costs vary depending on the size of the facility in question and local construction costs but we would estimate that it would be between $100,000 - $125,000 per daily ton of waste processed. Annual operating costs: Operating costs should be between $25 - $40/Ton before energy revenues. Cost per ton: Should be between $45 - $55/Ton in ahigh-energy market place like Hawaii Financing possibilities: Barlow offers to develop projects with either Public or Private ownership options depending upon the needs of the customer. Acreage needed: A minimum of 5 acres Power generated (in MW): Depends on waste processed and steam usage. A typical 100 TPD facility will generate 2 MW net of parasitic loads. Other end products: A WTE facility can generate steam for process or district heating use or electricity or both (co-generation) Risks: None. This is a proven technology. Environmental impacts: Minimal. Modern waste-to-energy facilities must comply with very strict EPA air and waste water discharge requirements. Waste ash can be used for a variety of applications and leachate has been shown to be close to US EPA drinking water standards. Social impacts: Minimal. A modern waste-to-energy facility will present no more noise or traffic than a landfill and because the enclosed tipping hall is kept under a negative pressure, pulling all air through the furnace, odors outside the facility are not a problem. A WTE facility will also employ between 12 - 16 people working multiple shifts. Timeline from acceptance to full operation: 18 - 24 months after permitting has been completed.
