The only way to reduce thas incredibly high exposure rate is to enact legislation that protects people's health
rather than allowing it t€s be eo~inually undernnined by exposure to ETS.
The United- States Surgean. general's Report, Rec~uci>rtg ~'obbacco Use, pointed out that smoke free legislation
lowers smoking prevalence and talracco eonsttmption rates.2 .
The U.S. Surgeon general also foamd a very interesting correlation. Smoke free legislation increased the
number of individual smdkers who-are prepared to-quit. What an important discovery when one cansiders that
half of all smokers have tried to quit or-are considering quitting.3
Clearly, the harmful effects of ETS are well documented, forming a significant body of evidence that has
convinced districts across the United States to enact legislation protecting it's citizens from these known and
deadly health risks.
