Your Committee on Finance. to which was referred Communication No. 753, reports as follows:
Communication No. 753, transmitted by Mayor Harry Kim, dated September 23. 2002.
nominates Mr. Gary N. Yoshiyama of Council District 2 to the Hawaii County Liquor
Commission. Mr. Yoshiyama would replace Mr. Sidney Lee who resigned.
A lifetime resident of Hawaii, Mr. Gary N. Yoshiyama is currently employed by the Hawaii
Government Employees Association. Mr. Yoshiyama serves on the Hawaii County Workforce
Investment Board and the Hawaii County Community Services Committee. In the past, he has
served as a Hawaii County Charter commissioner and a board member of the Hawaii Island
United Way. Of no political party affiliation, he will serve a term to end December 31, ?003.
Pursuant to Article VII, Chapter 3, Section 7-32, Hawaii County Charter, there shall be a liquor
commission consisting of nine members who shall be appointed by the mayor and confirmed by
the council.
Some members of Your Committee expressed concerns over the same person servicing on more
than one commission, which may inhibit opportunities for other individuals to serve on various
commissions.
Council Member Tyler requested a copy of Mr. Sidney Lee's resignation letter prior to the next
Council meeting.
Your Committee on Finance recommends the confirmation of Mr. Gary N. Yoshiyama to the
Hawaii County Liquor Commission.
