Unfortunately, I will be unable to
attend the hearing, so T would like to express my concerns about
the of spending $2 million for a Post Harvest Treatment Facility.
I can understand the need for creating more opportunities for
employment on the Big Island and I feel that agriculture is
probability one of the best solutions for this, but I feel that
spending 2 million tax payers dollars for a faeili.ty that has the
potential for being very dangerous in a market (irradiated fruit)
that hasn't, to my knowledge, proven to be viable is not very
responsible. My major question concerning this bill is what kind
of return is the county going to get on this investment. I can
understand that there may be some jobs created but how many and
what type? Will the county get a percentage of profits made with
the fruit that is being processed? Who will be responsible with
the operation and maintenance of the facilities? Will the facility
be a full time operation or just used whenever there is a demand?
How large is the demand? Who will be legally responsible for the
facility, the county or the company running the plant. i
personally feel that the county government should govern and not
get into the fruit irradiation business. if private industry would
like to invest $2 million of their ocrn money is one thing, but
investing $2 million of my and other tax paying citizens money is
another.
So please, don't allow the mayor to put us further in debt.
Thank you,
Sincerel ~i
Nicholas Shema
QOmli1.
