Hawaii is blessed with the highest lon evity,, n America and is
often touted as the `health state.' People co a he e for relaxation,
fun and health, making tourism our biggest econf~ is concern when
considering any long-range planning. In of er wpfds, people
associate "Hawaii" with "Health," and it is in our Test interest to keep
it that way.
People do not associate radiation and adura symbols with
health. Fresh produce is healthy. Certified rgani<'cl is healthy. Let's
invest resources in that! Japanese farmers a cu'~t~ng out the use of
many costly and health-damaging pesticides by {~~ing Superoxide
water technology. It is non-toxic. It is dis ibutelil in America by
Starfire International, located right here on his island.
Growing healthier plants means not o y haa~~~thier food, but
also greater disease resistance. When Imo ed hege and bought an
organic farm, the anthuriums were being gr wn Qrganically, and they
were beautiful. They were the only ones u affected by the
anthurium blight.
Look at the viral problem affecting o r headily pesticide-
intoxicated papaya industry. Starfire distri utes'~organic papaya
products produced in Hawaii. We would n [consider distributing
irradiated food products due to the detrimen al health effects. See
the following excerpt from my book, Electr magrpe[ic Pollution
Solutions for the many concerns we have. I

In the Hilo paper, the promoter of irr diata'o compares food
irradiation to microwaves. I couldn't agree more', with the
comparison. Although microwaves are not onizjn radiation, thus
having much less potential to produce dise e-ca~~ng effects in our
food, studies in Europe have showed that ogle (Keating microwave-
cooked food after just a couple weeks alrea y sh W the same type of
changes in the blood as those seen among c ncer ii, patients. Don't we
have more than enough cancer in America? Thy? tstatistics are rapidly
increasing toward 1 in 2 expected to get ca cer 'd ring their lifetime
by the year 2000 if we don't do something diffex;e~t. Shipment and
storage of more radioactive materials to our 'slang is not going to
help. Exposure of food to devitalizing, dam gingjl'rradiation is not
going to help. Most people on the island a read ' have radioactive
byproducts of the plutonium industry in the r hoes and offices.'
We should be getting rid of such an undesi able .p'~resence, not
increasing it. Will radioactive material be s ippec# in by boat? How
would a spill in Hilo Bay be handled? By r? T2t~agine the potential
problems there.

radiation free smoke alarms that would also save ore l i s from fires on the
island, if they were installed instead.
