Dear Council t•Sember Yagong:
I am writing to urge your strong support for the
establishment of an agricultural irradiation facility
on the Big Island, an issue which I understand is to
come before you later this week.
With the decline or virtual elimination of the
sugar industry, it is essential that the Big Island
looks to new sources to revitalize its economy and all
of the attendant job implications. The diversification
of agriculture into new and readily e.cportable crops can
only occur if the irradiation facility becomes a reality.
Everywhere else where it is done in the world, the
public health concerns have been shown they can be
thoroughly addressed and met. Please do not let unfounded
hysteria or ill-informed contentions cloud your conclusions
on this, one of the most important proposals for the
improvement of lIawaii's future.
