PAHOA, HI 96778 _ '97 APR 21 Pf1 3 1.1 COUNT',' _i=.( C©UNTY" Gr HAWAII Mayor and County Council County of Hawaii 25 Apuni St. Hilo, Hawaii 96720 Dear Sirs: I am unable to attend to meeting April 24, 1997 on county tax funding of an irradiation plant, however, I am opposed to the use of county monies for this project. This is the kind of project that belongs in the private sphere. I read in the Tribune Herald that private companies are willing to fund such a venture and that they can do so with less capital outlay. This seems reasonable to me. Although I would never knowingly eat food processed in this manner, I believe everyone is entitled to the cancer of their choice. The consumers choice will be made in the market place, however, the county taxpayer should not be subsidizing a forced choice. I am also disturbed at the elusive labeling used with these produces." Irradiated fruit "would be more honest. Whatever, you choose to call it. I grow my own organically so my family won't be eating it. In closing, I am totally opposed to the use of any county funds for this project. Sincerely, ~ Bettie Van Overbeke Coma. Na '`2 l~4 »~e rro. GN'~ IC~P Raf Presented F~ Ret. T?nte_ APR 2 1 1997
