Since the cost of shipping represents such a large percentage of the final price of
products we consume, and the need to stem the outward flow of dollars is critical, the
crop best suited to re-starting our agricultural industry is one that produces a product
for local consumption. Likewise, any crop grown for export will have a similar price
disadvantage in distant markets and will have difficulty competing.
Therefore, the best candidate is probably a crop grown for energy - or, bio-fuel.
Industrial hemp along with a number of other crops such as energy grasses, bamboo
and even the gorse plant are likely candidates in that they have additional uses as well.
I therefore ask that this council consider hemp in the context of the large picture,
including it in the overall vision of the new agriculture.
