Dear Ms. Bergin:
SUBJECT: SCHOOL CROSSING GUARD - PAHOA ELEMENTARY,
INTERMEDIATE AND HIGH SCHOOLS
A request was made by Pahoa Elementary, Intermediate and High
Schools for a School Crossing Guard at the intersection of
Route 130/Old Pahoa Village Road/Route 132.
Staff conducted a study of vehicular and pedestrian traffic at
the intersection. Attached for your review are its results.
We agree that a crossing guard should be placed at the
crosswalk at Old Pahoa Village Road and Kaohe Road which fronts
the school. However, our findings indicate that a crossing
guard at the intersection of Old Pahoa Village Road/Route
130/Route 132 is not warranted at the present time. It could
pose a potential liability and hinder traffic flow.
Both the Old Pahoa Village Road/Route 132 are governed by stop
signs, and traffic flows smoothly without interruption. No
problems were observed with pedestrian crossing, which is
minimal in the morning but increases in the afternoon.

If traffic lights are installed at this intersection in the
future, a School Crossing Guard could be used to assist
pedestrians.
Should you have any questions or require further information on
this matter, please contact Sergeant Jay Enanoria of our
Traffic Services Section at 961-2305.
Sincerely,
L~~~
