Re: Bill 462 RELATING TO THE POST HARVEST
TREATMENT FACILITY PROJECT
Honorable Chair and Members of the Committee:
My name is Tony Hanley and I am the Chair of the Economic Development
Committee for the Hawaii Island Portuguese Chamber of Commerce.
The Board of Directors of the Hawaii Island Portuguese Chamber of
Commerce unanimously supported a resolution in support of the
establishment of an irradiation facility in Hilo and supporting
the requests made by Mayor Yamashiro to have the County of Hawaii
facilitate its development through economic support.
Irradiation has been proven safe in construction and operation and
not harmful to the food products processed.
A major portion of our emerging diversified agriculture efforts
are saddled with the need to have their product treated for export,
with irradiation proven as a safe and effective solution.
Support the efforts of our farmers, by forming a partnership with
them in providing a safe, effective solution. Without such treat-
ment many of the saleable crops that are grown on this island
will not have the opportunity to be expanded.
Expansion means economic growth to this island.
Thank you for the opportunity to make these comments.
Very truly yours,
/ /
