I am in favor of this ban, especially in places such as restaurants where people tend to congregate in close quarters. I was a Hawaii County Fire Department Paramedic for several years (I presently work at the 911 Fire Dispatch Center). During that time I had the opportunity to personally see the adverse effects of what smoking can do to the smoker and the people around them. In my own family, there are two asthmatics that take medication everyday just to breathe and lead a normal life. I'm sure you realize that there are many people on our island with respiratory ailments. These people should be able to go out and enjoy the island's businesses without fear of aggravating their respiratory problems. At our worksite, the smokers go outside the building to smoke during their break. This system works very well, and everyone is happy. Today is a voggy day in Hilo. I think the breathing challenged people of our island have enough to contend with. Please pass a comprehensive smoking ban. Thank you for your time. Sincerely, ~CL'~.i_.~ Darryl D.
