RE: National Restaurant Associatlon'a Memorandum on the Economic Analysis
of the 188 Smoking Ban In Melns
Aloha. The National Restaurants Assodation's report from Dr. Michael L. Marlow of
California Polytechnic State UniversRy, studies show how smoking bans can trigger
revenues, lower wages and salaries for employees, fewer bps, and taw jobs in hospitality
establishments, particularly restaurant bars. There has been a 30% lost of revenue to
-bars inGuding resorts.

~ The National Restaurant Association represents all restaurants in the 50 State. Sales
are $408 Billion a year. The industry employs 11.6 million peopl®. Here in Hawaii, the
Hawaii Restaurant Association represents 3,500 restaurants 60,000 employees that
generate 2'.7 billion of our state's economy.
The Hawaii Restaurant Association is opposed to any City or County banning smoking in
j privately owned businesses. The Counsel's actions of banning smoking would add
additional lost of revenue to individual businesses and corporations. During these
difficult economic times, such an action is also against city end county "Charters", which
states that the City Council findings are for the "welfare", and "comfort of its inhabitants.'
