In 3 weeks I seem to have saved 2,000 lives and I'd really to try and save 53,000 more.
Starton Glantz fabricated the 53,000 number using unfout~ed and unscientific methods
(using documents stolen from Phillip Morris). A Sacramento Court issued a reshaining
order on him for destroying documetds and charged him with unauthorized use of
University of California resources for political lobbying, electioneErmg, and private
political activities and using his time on the university payroll to do so. Glantz is the
founder of Americans for Nonffitokers' Rights).
1989 U.S. Department of Transportation and National Academy of Sciences report on
aircraft cabin ai quality concluded cosmic radiation was a more serious problem for
aircrews than ETS (600% more dangerous).
1995 Congressional Research Service determined, "It is very possible that no deaths have
been caused by ETS."
1998 World Heahh Organization it largest study ever done on ETS (20 years in 21
countries) announced, "No statistically significant increase in hutg cancer for nonsmokers
exposed to ETS for 40 to 50 years."
2000 Oakridge National Laboratory completed a study in I6 U.S. cities and concluded,
"Exposure to ETS for wait staff and barte~ers is well below OSHA limits."
Of over 25 studies of ETS only 4 indicated any health hazard to nonsmokers. The 4
involved have been discredited as "predetermined" or spurious in methodology. Tyro of
the four are the EPA 3,000 deaths a year "study" which was declared nail and void by a
federal district court in 1998. The other, Glantz's fabrication of 53,000 deaths has been
decried by his own coworkers and is so outrageous that no govemtrx;nt agency will give
it houseroom. Yet to this day, EPA continues to use the 3,000 figure and heatt, lung and
cancer organizations tout the 53,000 numbers, knowing full well they are bogus.
Itnerestiog footnote: July 1999 JAMA reported that the tobacco industry had $$0 million
in sales. Taxes on those sales? Federal Government $222 million and state governments
$293 million, guess who's really in the tobacco business?
