Dear Hawaii County Council Members; ~~~T~~O-=--
~ounty Goundl P P e
ti .
am writing to express my concern with the requested zoning change from present
Residential Zoning to Commercial for the proposed lumber/equipment rental yard in downtown
Volcano Village. Such a facility, with the large warehouses and added traffic and noise, does not
belong in our "Village Commercial" area--should be placed in an area set aside for industrial type
commercial development. Volcano Village is the gateway to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, a
premier eco-tourism destination. 'Tourists patronize Volcano Village because they like the quiet
forested village atmosphere. We already have several business establishments in downtown
Volcano Village and they have fashioned themselves so they promote the "village" atmosphere.
Most of these businesses are surrounded by residences, many old enough to be designated
historical. It is imperative the development in Volcano Village be planned so that the character of
downtown Volcano Village is preserved. Would alumber/equipment rental warehouse be placed
in downtown Hilo or on Ali'i Drive in Kailua-Kona?-I think not.
l support light industrial commercial development in the Volcano area. A large parcel of
suitable land In Volcano lies adjacent to Highway 1 l; it is tar from residential areas and would be
ideal to be partially re-zoned to allow development of light industrial commercial establishments.
Please reject this inappropriate re-zoning request and encourage Mr. Thomas to develop his
needed facilities in a more appropriate location.
