Dear Mr. Arakaki:
It's with pleasure that I write and speak to you, and the Hawaii County Council.
This letter is in support of Maurice Thomas' (True Value Hardware Store) requested
extension of his commercial village rezoning in Volcano village for a retail equipment
rental and material storage warehouse.
Division ]2. CV, Village Commercial Districts of the Hawaii County Code, Section 25-
5-120 Purpose and applicability states that "The CV (Village commercial) district
provides for a broad range or variety of commercial and light industrial uses that are
necessary to serve the population in rural areas where the supplementary support of the
general business uses and activities of a central commercial district is not readily
available." (1996, Ord. No. 96-160, sec. 2; ratified April 6, 1999.)
Under Section 25-5-122, which covers permitted uses, section (e) states "Buildings and
uses normally considered accessory to the uses permitted in this section shall also be
permitted in the CV Village Commercial District." This was also ratified April 6, 1999.
Clearly the above supports Mr. Maurice Thomas' True Value Hazdware Store requested
extension of his commercial village rezoning in Volcano Village.
I don't believe that this request is any different then that of HPM commercial Waimea
Village rezoning extension approved by the Hawaii Council. Except That Mr. Thomas is
not requesting to build an outside exposed lumberyazd. His request is for two additional
buildings in back of his Volcano Village True Value Hardware Store.

Mr. Maurice Thomas is a volcano village home grown person. He is equally awaze of the
environment in the village. He loves the village and he and his family have supported
functions in the village time and time again. What does this mean to my wife and myself
and the good people of Volcano? It means that we have his direct support 7/24 (7 days a
week, 24 hours a day). He stocks items that aze needed and aze in direct support of our
community in volcano. The additional buildings will provide needed space and storage
for bulk items. He is a small businessman; he cannot afford the expense of shipping one
or two items in from the mainland. He has to order in bulk. His needs are justified, walk
into his store and note the myriad of items stocked from floor to ceiling.
Maurice Thomas employs approximately twenty people. That my good volcano friends
equates to approximately $120,000.00 a year, pumped back into our community in eazned
wages.
Maurice Thomas has directly supported this community in other ways as well. He saw
the need for a village Laundromat and he had one built; he saw the need for a barbershop,
he provide for one; he saw the need for a tourist information center, he had one built in
front of his store. He also sells items made and grown by some folks in our village
community.
Ladies and gentleman, this man and his family are 100 percent in support of the Volcano
Community Village. We need him and we need his support, and further more today we
need your support in this very important matter. On behalf of the good people in our
community I thank you for your time and good judgment.
