Dear Hawaii County Council Members,
I am writing this letter to ask you not to approve Maurice Thomas'
request (Bill # 4) to allow him to build and operate a Lumber
Warehouse (or whatever he may call it for now) expansion to his
present True Value Hardware Store In Volcano Village. What he called
a hardware store is now also a restaurant, an upstairs shop, a
Laundromat, an attraction to promote his 8&e listings (the so-called
visitor center), and has a big pond that needs to be monitored to make
sure It doesn't breed mosquitoes. I see a pattern forming.
I have lived in Volcano for about 8 years and now have a home in the
Golf Course Subdivision and own property in Mauna Loa Estates. I
was born in Hllo. I have lived on this island for most of my life.
I respectfully ask the Council to vote no to this application for an
exception. I understand there is an area just below the Village that is
more suitable and the owner of that property, Shipman, is open to use
of that area for such businesses that are presently not allowed under
"village commercial" for good reason.
Please do not allow Mr. Thomas to expand his business in Volcano
Village at the back of the present location of his businesses. The
expansion would intrude into the residential area behind on Kilauea St.
as well as destroy the "village" identity of the area. Once you allow
one exception, it will be dlfflcult to disallow other applications,
including whoever buys Ms. Porter's adjacent property. I hope the
community will form a Special Design District that the residents can
agree to. The result could be a definite tourist draw that would help
Hawaii County and also offer something different from the Hotel
setting in Hilo and the Kona coast. Can you imagine what would
happen to hotel and other businesses in Hilo and Kona ff large hotels
were built up in Volcano?
Thank you for reading this. I am from an old time business family in
Hilo and not against business. I am not against Mr. Thomas personally.
Sincerely,
Glenn Kadota
