Hilo, Hawaii 96720 ~ Dear Ms. Goldstein: Subject: Basil's Restaurant Application for a Sidewalk Use Permit On April 15, 1997, the Council Committee on Public Works and Parks discussed an application submitted by Khaled Mohammed to place tables and chairs on the sidewalk area outside Basil's Restaurant in Kailua-Kona. Because the Committee was advised that this proposed use would take place within Kailua Village, Committee members have requested input from the Kailua Village Design Commission before acting on this application. Pursuant to section 25-7-1(a), of the Hawaii County Code, we understand that one purpose of the commission is to advise the planning director concerning private improvements within Kailua Village. Further, section 25-7-4(c), Hawaii County Code, provides that the commission shall review all private improvement activities that will alter the physical appearance of Kailua Village and offer recommendations on these proposals to the planning director. Consequently, we would respectfully request that this matter be submitted to the Kailua Village Design Commission for its review and recommendation.
