It meant a lot to me to heaz the concern you expressed at the Council meeting re
the wonderful spirit of Volcano that you remembered. I want to reassure you that
" community togetherness" is still very much alive in Volcano.
Though we have been working our way through two issues lately, Fire Mountain
and now The True Value addition, the two factions put these differences aside and
go right back to working together for the good of our community and we are all
happy for it (though I must admit "Vision 20 20" is still a real problem for us all).
This community closeness is evident as you look around our village and are
immediately aware of all the things we have done together to make living in
Volcano very special. There's Cooper Center, our Volunteer Fire House, our
Ambulance, and lately being able to keep our Federal Fire Station at KMC for at
least another year and a half while the County makes plans to ultimately take it
over. We're now working on after school activities for boys and girls. Finding
"girl" activities wasn't difficult, but "boy" activities has been a challenge. It's
been heart warming though to hear from a number of men in the community who
have offered their volunteer help to teach :auto mechanics, wilderness safety,
shop, golf, tennis, basket ball, and even the supervising of the eradication of
invasive plants to be followed by a bazbecue..
But even greater evidence of a united community is our weekly Sunday morning
Farmers Market. You really should try to make the time to visit us on a Sunday
morning at 7(horrors!!) to see this feeling in action. I know it's eazly but it's what
vendors and customers alike wanted. People of many ethnic backgrounds and
ages, tourist and residents alike talking together at picnic tables after finishing their
shopping with coffee and goodies to munch on at the same time. The tourist love it
and a number of them have since moved permanently to Volcano because they
liked the "feel" of the area and aze now active members even to becoming
Neighborhood Watch leaders.
Be reassured it's still a wonderful place to live and perhaps even better than it used
to be because we've done so much of it ourselves without asking the government
to do it for us.
Thank you for the important part you are playing in making our whole Island a pp,,
