The Kona t ratfic Safety Committee is Concetned about proposed development on land adjacent ro and north of the
Kealoha, Kona Heights dnd Kailua View Estates Subdivisions. Devebpers are seeking re-zoningfrom agriaAture - S
aae to a single-family residential development to be aoocsscd ehrou~ three subJivislons: Kattua View Estates (Nani
Kailua Dr.), Kona Heigfrts aloha Kona & Melelina St) and Kealaha (Melelina St).
For cash new development, the County should require responsible roadway planning, design, and oonstruCtion
engineered for necessary access and dreulation with safety and quality of life issues in mind along with
environmental and economic objectives.
Because Nani Kailua Drive is visually a wide road and has slope conditions exceeding 10 percent, it encourages
speeding and has hecome potentially unsafe. last year, the Counul realized the need [o address this concEm and
earmarked $100,000 for uafRc alming features to be installed. It is undear what has happened to that plan.
DCfore any additional traffic burden is placed on the existing neighborhoods due to this and other development in
the area, the Kona Traffic Safety Committee requests that immediate plans be made to provide the appropriate
traffic calming along Nani Kailua Drive and Aloha Kona Strr~rr. Considering the nature of these roadways, it is likely
that the installation of bulb•outs or chicanes would provide motorist the necessary dues to slow them down, help
improve traffic safety, and not cost too much money.
We look forward h) working with the County to help make our roadways safe and effident for all modes of traffic
while maintaining neighborhoods worth caring about
