This is a Hazard Mitigation Grant Program project which would significantly improve our capabilities to minimize property losses and enhance public safety during future disasters. The County intends to retrofit the Kaumana, Waiakea, and Kailua-Kona Fire Stations and the Central Fire Station warehouse as these essential buildings are required to be in operation during and after a natural disaster such as an earthquake or hurricane. For this project, the Federal share is $652,076 and the County share is $217,358. If there are any questions, please do not hesitate to call the Department of Public Works. . REQUEST: To amend Ordinance 02-77 to add the Hardening of Essential Facilities project. BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION (USE ADDITIONAL SHEETS AS NEEDED): The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) approved the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program FEMA- 1348DR-HI, concerning hardening of Hawaii County essential facilities. The County intends to retrofit such facilities to increase the likelihood of them withstanding an earthquake or hurricane. The current priority is fire stations.
