Leningrad Elarionoff, Committee Chair
County Council
25 Aupuni Street
Hilo, HI 96720
Dear Mr. Elarionoff and members of the Committee:
I am writing in support of Councilman Bob Jacobson's
Resolution on the War
in Iraq. I teach Sociology at Hawaii Community
College and as a matter of
my professional work, I pay close attention to the
pulse of our political
life locally, nationally and internationally.
These days I am very alarmed at the directions that our
national government
is taking in many arenas, but especially with regard to
the military actions
in the Middle East. We have left Afghanistan in
shambles--which is an
invitation to the resurgence of the Taliban and above
all anti-American
terrorists. We have attacked Iraq against the will of
the United Nations
(undermining that valued institution) and against
almost all of the world's
opinion. Today Iraq is in chaos and anarchy but I am
reading that the
administration is already considering attacking Syria

and probably Iran and
North Korea--among other nations.
This is an administration that may be trying to seal
its next term by having
our nation perpetually embroiled in war.
Unfortunately, the media belongs
to the pro-war camp, and much of the nation is naive to
the deceptions and
wiles of political strategists.
I believe that the only hope to contain this
administration's momentum for
war is the voice and actions of educated citizens
taking a stand against
these wars--and for a policy of peace. Many local
governments in our
country are making their resistance to becoming an
attack nation through
resolutions like the one submitted by Councilman Bob
Jacobson. Please
support this effort--as it will be one of the few
things we, on the Big
Island, can do to stop the United States from expanding
this disastrous
aggressive military agenda.
Sincerely,
Noelie
Rodriguez, Ph. D.
