Since this resolution was written the invasion of Iraq ended but
resistance to its occupation may continue indefinitely. I fully endorse
the spirit of the resolution; precise wording can never cover ever
changing circumstances.
1 believe the spirit of this resolution calls for immediate replacement
of U.S. presence in Iraq with U.N. forces. The United States was the
' leading force in liberating Iraq from its despot after 12 years of
bombing and sanctions that reduced its people from the highest living
standard among the Arab nations to the lowest -with the highest rates
of malnutrition, diseases, and mortality at all age levels. We
"destroyed V~iehtam in order to save it," as we have just dons in Iraq.
But if we do not remove our presence from Iraq, as we did in Vetnam,
we risk a U.S. occupation costly in many more lives and treasure.
I support the spirit and wording of this resolution that apposes U.S.
policy of preemptive war that threatens all sentient life with doomsday
weapons. The production and maintenance of these weapons in
obscene excess of our defensive needs is impoverishing this nation for
the benefit of profiteers in a bloated military/industrial complex
President Eisenhower warned is destructive of democracy. We are
experiencing that destruction now with a Patriot Act that abrogates the
Bill of Rights for increasing; numbers of residents in this country on
unproven suspicions of terrorism that is ever more broadly defined.
The United States already has more prisoners than any nation in the
world, including China with three times our population.
Our supremacy in death-dealing weapons and prisons signifies gravely
disordered national values. George W. Bush presided over more
executions in his state than any other governor in the nation. His
presidency promises unprecedented killing and accelerated extinction
of many species supporting human survival. Passing Resolution 56-
03 will do little to stop that. But every little bit is necessary. ~y
