We are unable to attend the public meeting about Resolution 65-03 calling For the
removal of the gate on Ainaloa, which links Orchidland with Hawaiian Acres, as we have
a conflicting medical appointment. We would like to introduce the following into public
record:
The inability to use Ainaloa to enter Hawaiian Acres causes us great economic hardship.
When we purchased our land in Hawaiian Acres ILots #2769, 2768 and 2767) we
anticipated that we would need to rent a place (currently at Orcllidland, 16-1851 riima)
while we did. our land preparation and building. We are both Disabled American
veterans an a Fixed income. Without access from Orchidland, where we rent, to
Hawaiian Acres to work on our land, we must drive 18 miles more to get there (out
Highway 130 to Keaau, up Highway 11 to Mountain View, then in on South Kulani to
Hawaiian Acres). The additional 18 miles at high gas prices, is a great deal of money for
our round trip each day.
Another economic impact caused by the closure, is that our plans include planting
vegetables and fruits that will be our household firod, {grown on our land even prior to
building our house). It is unnecessary to comment on the high price of vegetables on this
island. However, those prices provide further substantiation of this impact.
We do not understand why the County, using Federal Funds, (our taxes at work), to
constntet and pave Ainaloa Boulevard, would close it off to the public. The road is there,
why can't we use it777 Does this not constitute Fraud, Waste and Abuse of Federal
funds? But really, the bottom-line, is that it is itnlevant which funds were used. What is
relevant is that closing off an existing asset is WASTE(!
Monetary considerations aside, does this not also impact our environrncnt? Think of all
the cars traveling the additional miles to Hawaiian Acres. It's a fact that fossil fuels
affect our atmosphere. One could argue that fossil fuels are a necessary evil -alternative,
c:~_~aer fuels are not available yet. But each additional mile traveled results in more
pollution, and more use of fuel.
