Regarding the bill to create a `'Smoke Free" place for workers and customers in restaurants and
bars I would like to offer the following information.
1 am 80-year-old man who quit smoking in ] 957, and 1 am very healthy today. I am now a very
confirmed opponent of the use of tobacco in public places and especially in a confined area or
areas where we meet to eat and drink.
We now know for certain that second hand tobacco smoke when inhaled by innocent bystanders
as well as employees is almost as damaging as to the individual smoking the cigarettes. I find
tobacco smoke to be very offensive, and I refuse to patronize an establishment that allows the
use of cigarettes, cigars or pipe smoking.
I am a 20-year member of the Keauhou Kona Yacht Club, and when we passed a ruling to ban
smoking within our club ten years ago there were a good many people who said this would send
an unwelcome message to many of our members. When we finally enacted the ruling we found
that we had nothing but complimentary remarks from our membership and attendees. The few
people who insisted on smoking were then directed out onto the open air dockside tables, and
even those individuals had f
avorable comments regarding their appreciation of having an outdoor
place of their own where they would not offend others.
Many of our yacht club members are also members of the Kona Elks Lodge, but there are many
more of us who would like to join their hospitable group, but we refuse to eat and drink out of an
ashtray.
We have heard the argument that people who are addicted to the use of tobacco find it very
uncomfortable to live with limited restrictions against their use of tobacco. On the other hand we
all remember when airplanes were foul smelling smoke chambers, and travelers were forced to
launder their smoky clothing at the end of their Trip. Now the smokers do not find it impossible
or inconvenient to do without the use of tobacco for five and six hours or more. Surely they can
do without their cigarettes for the period of time that it takes to have a leisurely dinner and a few
drinks.
I encourage you to support Hil] #260. Let's make Hawaii County a health leader by the passing
of this law. ~

resNm... Dr Holschuh, I would truly appreciate your attention to this
matter. I have taken the liberty to forward the same message to many of the other council members with
the hopes that as a team you can all get behind this bill and make it happen. It is a health issue of great
importance, but more than that it is also a common sense issue that is sorely needed at this time.
