Dear Dr. Holschuh.
I am writing in support of Biil 280. Bill 260 will protect workers and
customers from second hand smoke, a pratection that is necessary
and deserved.
The effect of breathing tobacco smoke literally makes me nauseated.
I avoid restaurants and other businesses where there will be smoke.
When I travel. i choose destinations and environments where I v~ill be
able to breathe dean 2ir_ Hawaii Island is known for its many health
oriented businesses and citizens, and thus a destination to meny
visitors. It wauld be wonderful if the County Council brought its laws
up to date and recognized that the pubic (residents and visitors alike)
wants and expects a healthy environment.
It must be corrected that some workers on the Big Island are exposed
to second hand smoke, please protect them by passing Bill 260.
And, to insure a healthier working environment far all ernployeea, the
protection of Bill 260 must extend coverage to workers in restaurants
and bars; please be sure to give full consideration to therm.

My n:unc is Lily NH Ly and I am the manager ai Ba-Ic Kona Restaurant. Uur restaurant has
Mtcm smoko-l'ncc from the beginning and I can't begin to tell you how beneficial it's been to not
only our customers, but to our employees also. All of our customers appreciate our smoke-free
environment and they don't hesitate to tell us so. They all share the common goal of living a
healthy lifestyle and they all agree that smoke-lien dining is s reality That should occur. Not only
will more customers be drawn to smoke-free nslaurants, but it also helps to ctratc an ambience
of relaxation that I'm sure that all customers want to enjoy. The nicer the environment, the more
customers will want to stay and relax in, which in turn will bring more business. F,mployees will
also benefit from this smoke-free work envimnment. We have employees who smoke, but they
all understand that Ihcy have to go elsewhere to smoke since the other employees don't like the
smell of cigarettes or putting their health at risks. Working in smoke-fret businesses is nut only
more enjoyable, but Icss employees are sick too.
To endure smoking in restaurants would mean higher costs in cleaning and not to mention,
permanent damage in building and fumishinfrs to the restaurant. Being that the economy in
I lawaii is w slow already; wouldn't we want a law that will help to create restaurants where all
people want to lxx, especially with health in mind'? Nobody wants to go to a place where their
health is at risk just because the person next to them wants to smoke. Make restaurants smoke-
frcc; we all want the people in I lawaii to live long and happy lives and passing bill 260 will do it.
