could you imagine how quickly government would make all workplaces and public places smokefree? But, alas, it
only transmits cancer, respiratory illness, heart disease, and asthma.
Tobacco smoke is the #1 cause of disease and death in our society. Primary inhalation of tobacco smoke kills more
than 400,000 Americans each yeaz. Secondhand inhalation of tobacco smoke kills more than 50,000 Americans each
year. Diseases caused by tobacco smoke cost American taxpayers more than $100 billion annually.
Three states (California, Delaware, and New York) and many cities have passed legislation requiring ALL workplaces
(including offices, restaurants, bazs, bingo parlors, bowling alleys, casinos, nightclubs, and taverns) to be smokefree.
Other states and cities are considering doing the same. If you would like to send a letter in support of smokefree
workplace legislation where you live, go to wva w smokefree.org
