Re: Bill 260, relating to smokefree indoor workplaces
I am writing as a concerned citizen and as a throe-time cancer survivor to
express my opinion about the above referenced bill. 1 believe it should be
passed Tor a number oT reasons.
You have heard much about the health hazards of second hand smoke - I
believe most are in agreement that it is dangerous, not a good thing to be
exposed to, and particularly bad for those who must work in what is now the
smoky environments of bars and restaurants.
The main concern of the council is that the bill will negatively impact
business. However, evidence Trom states and cities that have gone smoke
free shows the opposite -that creating smoke free workplaces is actually
good for business.
Our state experience with the smoke free restaurants ordinance in Oahu has
been positive. Restaurants in Oahu have not reported a negative impact on
business and some have reported an increase in revenue. There are good
examples of restaurants in Hawaii that are doing very well, and are very
popular with both local residents and the Asian tourist market. The Oahu
ordinance is providing a safer work environment and not hurting the
restaurant business.
1 personally do not go to restaurants or bars that allow smoking, a real
challenge to Tind such at present here in East Hawaii. 1 patronize Don's Grill
since they are now non-smoking and will go to Crony's since they arc
following suit I also do not attend events in show rooms that allow smoking.
The Lava Lounge, a bar in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, went smoke-free
in December. I now go there for cocktails and dancing when it is offered and
enjoy the non-smoking environment very much. The same is true of many
other people in the Volcano community who would not go there before.
B~~siness seems brisk and the smokers go outside when they want to light up.
This is working very well for all concerned.
