My name is Mafia Kraan, Chef and Owner of Mafia's Cafe, located in Historic Spencer
House, Kamuela, Hawaii. We have been a NON SMOKING Cafe since we first opened
in November of 1995. Our guests are free to go outside into the open air and smoke if
they have to, which they sometimes do, only to take a few "puffs", then return to the
Cafe. We have never had a customer complain regarding this policy(I hopefully attribute
this to our WONDERFl1L FOOD, FANTASTIC AMBIANCE, AND GREAT
SERVICE!!) To this date, we have only "lost" 4 heavy dedicated smokers(it was quite
obvious by the Tobacco smell, and that "wonderful" hacking cough) who thought that
they should not be discriminated, and proceeded to walk away grumbling.....with lit
cigarettes in hand! Prior to them leaving, I thanked them for coming, and apologized for
any inconvenience our policy caused them, and suggested another restaurant in the area
with smoking privliges. I am asthmatic, and never appreciated the smoking public from
"blowing out" their smoke....I am told by my smoking friends that one of the reasons they
do it is because it "tastes so good".....if this is true, why blow the smoke out, just swallow
it!! (along this train of thought) I have yet to see a person "vomit" a Great Meal because it
"tastes so good"! In closing, we have found that there are more customers that prefer a
Non Smoking cafe(some of which are actual smokers, but don't mind the inconvenience
of smoking outside). '
