My name is Lily NH Ly and I am the manager at Ba-le Kona Restaurant. Our restaurant has
been smoke-free from the beginning and I can't begin to tell you how beneficial it's been to not
only our customers, but to our employees also. All of our customers appreciate our smoke-free
environment and they don't hesitate to tell us so. They all share the common goal of living a
healthy lifestyle and they all agree that smoke-free dining is a reality that should occur. Not only
will more customers be drawn to smoke-free restaurants, but it also helps to create an ambience
of relaxation that I'm sure that all customers want to enjoy. The nicer the environment, the more
customers will want to stay and relax in, which in turn will bring more business. Employees will
also benefit from this smoke-free work environment. We have employees who smoke, but they
all understand that they have to go elsewhere to smoke since the other employees don't like the
smell of cigazettes or putting their health at risks. Working in smoke-free businesses is not only
more enjoyable, but less employees aze sick too.
To endure smoking in restaurants would mean higher costs in cleaning and not to mention,
permanent damage in building and furnishings to the restaurant. Being that the economy in
Hawaii is so slow already; wouldn't we want a law that will help to create restaurants where all
people want to be, especially with health in mind? Nobody wants to go to a place where their
health is at risk just because the person next to them wants to smoke. Make restaurants smoke-
free•, we all want the people in Hawaii to live long and happy lives and passing bill 260 will do it.
