RE: Bill #260 Smoking in the Workplace
Dear City Council Members:
I am writing in support of the bill to ban smoking in the workplace.
As a nonsmoker, I am very much aware of the harm second hand smoke can
cause. It is a health hazard in the workplace as well as in restaurants. It may
be responsible for about 3,000 cases of lung cancer deaths in nonsmoking
adults and an additional 35,000 to 40,000 cases of heart disease in
nonsmokers.
I am a mother and grandmother with asthma as well as a heart condition.
Employment at a smoke tree business is not an option for me; it is a must.
My choice of restaurants is limited in Hilo because of the number of eating
estab]ishments that allow smoking. As a parent and grandparent my hopes
for my children & grandchild's future do not include developing heart
disease and/or cancer because of someone else's addiction to tobacco.
I hope that the City Council will do the right thing for the people of Hawaii
County and their health issues bypassing this bill is support of banning
smoking in the workplace. We can't control the vog from the Volcano but
you, as council members, can help control the enviromnent by passing this
bill and making Hawaii County- a healthier place to live, wodc and play.
