Beavers and I am in support of bil! 260, and humbh• ask for your support, [ am a senior at Hilo high school, and I have been waitressing for the past two years. In those two years,l have been subjected to harmful second hand smoke. for example. while waiting on smokvtg patrons, I suddenly began feeling very nauseoas and went in the back to sit down, causing my proficiencc to be delayed. This is the reason for my strong feelings on this issue. For the next five yeazs, I must continue to wartress in order to help pa} my wav through college- I believe that good health is key in livings fulfilling and successfiil life. My name is Robynne Tanaka and I am writing in strong support of Bill 260 because we need to start protecting all workers from the harmful effects of second hand smoke. I also support ttus bill because there aze many people who smoke and say that it is their right to smoke if they want, but l feel it is my right to breathe fresh air. There are always pros and cons to everything, for example, smoking in public places could bring customers in but at the same time, chase them away. I feel that the customers and the employees would be much healthier and that could reduce health insurance. The workers would be more productive because they will not need to take smoke breaks- I think that there can be fewer complaints from workers and customers about people smoking, which will lead to less discomfort in the work area. The worker or customer who smokes the cigarette has the higher step, having a fitter on the end, cuts out many chemicals that second hand smokers breathe in with the smoke that is in the air. The third leading cause of preventable death, killing 53,000 non- smokers in the US each year. For every eight smokers the tobacco industry kills, it takes one non-smoker with them. it is known to cause other respiratory problems in non- smokers, including coughing, phlegm, chest discomfort, reduced lung function, lung and nasal sinus cancer, heart disease, and sudden infant death syndrome. 1 urge the council to pass Bill 260. The reason why I support this bill is, when non-smokers go out to restaurants they have a right to breathe clean air. We all know that second hand smoke is much more dangerous then smoking. The workers also have a right to work in an environment that won't be harmful to their heath. All of the carGnogens produced by cigarette smoke if inhaled excessively can cause serious problems to a persons health and may even lead to death. Support of Bill 260 Relating to Smoke-free indoor workplaces Hello, my name is Joan Kirkpatrick, and I am writing in strong support for Bi11260. It is so important that we consider and protect the health of all employees from the adverse effects of secondhand smoke. People choose not to smoke for various reasons whether it is their health or even the smell. Whatever it is, it is their choice. Allowing smoking indoors takes that choice away from the employees of that establishment. I also support this bill because I, as a consumer, avoid certain establishments because of the smoke and the smell of cigazettes. For example, I refuse to take my children to the Hilo bawling alley where their father is an avid bowler. I also had brunch at Pescatore where they sat us in the back room. There, another patron sat smoking with no care in the world that others, like my family, sat with him- [had to take my 10-month-old daughter outside because it was so bad. [t upset me that he was so uncaring. Where was our right to enjoy our meal that morning? I'm sure that patron enjoyed his. I strongly urge the council to pass this bill. Businesses may think they will lose revenue, however, I feel it will do the exact opposite. My name is KeLson Paiva. I am writing in strong support of Bill 260 we need to start protecting all workers from the harmful effects on second-hand smoke. I also support this bill because second hand smoke can fill the air with dirty smoke and others 3re in the perimeter of the smoke can inhale it. Also, many workers might have respiratory illnesses such as asthma, which is not good for their heahh. I do not like second hand smoke because it stinks a lot and it can make my clean lungs go dirty. Tobacco can ruin my lungs even though it is in the air and I do not touch a cigarette. The best way is to not smoke indoors anywhere in public facilities. I urge the council to pass this bill. Most of the people that work in a bar are getting second hand smoke. These people that don't smoke have to work in places that let people smoke indoors because there aren't that many jobs in Hawaii. The workers have a hard time breathing and talking when asking the people what they would like to order. I wouldn't like it if I was getting my food and the person giving me my food can't talk or breath that good. When you get a job it shouldn't kill you! When smoking at a bar the bartender gets second hand smoke, and the person giving your food gets second hand smoke too. If you smoke would you like it if your bartender or waitress dies because he/she had second hand smoke and had never smoke a day in there life? If this Bill gets passed you will save lives. I alp surd :.-::his bill because my grandma died from cancer and I miss her very much. About 13 years ago my mother's mother died from cancer that eat up her liver. She used to smoke on an average of 2 packs a day. I believe that she started smoking from the age of 17 and from that age on everything got worse. My grandma was one person who never tilted to go to the doctor. She believed in natural ways of medicine. It also made it worse because my gandpa used to smoke too. If people smoke heavily in closed doors people that don't smoke have a higher risk of sickness due to the dangerous effects of second hand smoking. I urge the council to pass this bill. We should compromise, because it's like you support the smokers more than the non-smokers, because every6where smokers go they can smoke, and everywhere non-smokers go they have no choice but to breathe in other peoples smoke. I srongly support Bill 260 because my mother is anon-smoker and she brnvls at the Milo Lanes howling alley at least three times a wcek. She is exposed to smoke from 5:00 ull about 10:00 every time that she bowls. She comes home ai the end of the night with the strong smell of smoke on her as if she smoked cigarettes herself. There are young adults who go to the smoke-Slled Hilo Lanes to play pool or x~ideo games and bowl also, m which the} are exposed to the dangerous effects of cigarette smoke. I feel extremely som for those who bowl there and have to bring rhea young ones because there is no one to watch them at home. These select young children will develop respiratory problems in their older years and will have to suffer as adults. I personalh have a hard time being in Hilo lanes because I have asthma, in which the cigarette smoke causes me to wheeze and cnuglt. I feel extremely bad for the non-smolang workers who are employed at these smoke-filled places, they are ex?reP~ to smoke as long as they are in the facility, and this could be for 6-8 hours straight. This is equivalent to being a cigarette smoker with a had habit. These workers have to make a living to support their families and themselves, so they don't really have a choice to just quit and look fot another job. (f Bill 260 were passed, then these workers would have more healthy gears ahead of them and would be more grateful to come to work evcrc day. I strongly feel that $ill 264 should be passed Ixcattse I have asthma, and I was diagnosed with it from when I was about 4 years old. I am now• 18 years old, attend Hilo High School, and I still have asthma. I will graduate on May 30, 2003 and further my education as a computer science major, attending the University of Hawaii at Hilo. I strongly agree for $il1260 to be passed because there are many students out there who can have the opportunity to further therr education also, with healthier lives. These students can make something of themselves if they are not exposed to smoke filled places in their elementary years. Most of these chIldren end up smoking due to the observations over the years. it also looks as if smoking was normal for them because everyone around them fines it too. My name is Lindsey Iyo and I am writing in very strong support of Bill 260. I can clearly see that this bill would be a gigantic help toward the protection of all workers from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke. I believe that Bi11260 would only benefit everyone in the community. An example of how this bill would help our community is it would give us healthier workers in general. If smoking in an enclosed public area or workplace were banned, then fewer people would receive secondhand smoke. By lessening the number of people who receive secondhand smoke, it will lessen their chances of getting very ill. Did you know that there are over 53,000 deaths each year in the IJnited States alone, which aze related directly to secondhand smoke exposure? Why shouldn't we here in Hawaii attempt to cut that number down? I, myself, have been severely sick at times due to the exposure to secondhand smoke and mainstream smoke, I have had asthma since I was in the seventh grade and it is partially due to my father being a heavy smoker. I also get sick many times when eating at restaurants such as, Ken's House of Pancakes and Denny's, where they do allow smoking inside- I can tell you from personal experience that it makes no difference if I am served in the same room as the smokers or in the "non-smoking" room. The smoke travels and even just that little bit of smoke will get me coughing. 'Therefore, I see the only solution to protecting individuals in the community like myself, employees to local businesses and non-smokers is to ban smoking in enclosed public areas and workplaces, totally. Zb support my statement I would like to add a personal experience with second hand smoke. When I was little my little brother aad I got sick due to my grandmama smoking caastantly. At one point my brother was rushed to the hospital because his condition was bad. The doctors had told my parents that it was because of my graadmama smoking around us. A week after that, my grandmama had totallp quit smoking. If this bill is gassed, it would be appreciated because we wouldn't want one of the workers, at these public places (that allow smoking), to collapse or be rushed to the hospital.
