Council presentation Counsy C~wndl To County Council Members: I am Glenys Spitze & I thank you for letting my testimony be heard again. Any ordinance to control exposure to ETS would lessen the lifethreatening sensitivity I have to tobacco smoke.Because of polio damage to my central nervous system , I have breathing problems & am a respirator at night.I must avoid all types of air pollution as much as possible. My home is a condo unit on the seashore & my visits from there are restricted as much as possible away from ETS.Tobacco smoke is officially a carcinogen & has been shown to cause non-smokers heart attacks at even higher rates than to smokers. It seems only reasonable to protect all people ,including our more vulnerable children, from ETS in public buildings & common azeas,& in work places of any type. Condo residents share common air vents & lanai areas with all the other units in the bldg..Non-smokers are helpless to keep free from ETS. In Dec. arenter-smoker of the unit above me refused to consider my needs, making me very ill every time she smoke a cigazette. 1 soon developed a cazdiology problem whichis on-going. Smokers who refuse to consider the well-being of others , or themselves, need to be aware they have no right to make other people smoke. Laws need to help that awazeness & protect all of us from unnecessary illness & shorten life. A democratic society is for the common good. Thank you for your consideration. We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience. ALOHA NUI!! Comm. Np. ~ ~•1~ Ref. T . Ref. Date 5/6/03
