My name is Erica Keller; I am a 7t1i grader at Hualalai Academy. I am also
a concerned citizen who would like to share my feelings about. the
proposed bill relating to smoking in public places.
Second hand smoke is a major problem. When people smoke in public
places such as restaurants and office buildings they and the people around
them are breathing in 4000 chemicals and 40 cancer causing carcinogens.
Smoking kills 420,000 Americans each year. Second hand smoke causes
close to 50,000 deaths per year. Children are especially sensitive to the
harmful effects of tobacco smoke. Children exposed to too much tobacco
have higher rates of illness then children who are not. Having a non-
smoking section is not enough. Even with non-smoking sections the
smoke is still there. Do us all a favor and eliminate the harmful risks of
second hand smoke for the citizens of Kona. Please vote to pass this
ordinance.
