RELATING TO SMOKING IN CERTAIN PLACES COUNTY OF HAWAII

The Honorable Fred Holschuh, M.D., Chair and Bob Jacobson, Vice Chair:
My name is Virginia Isbell and I wish to testify in strong support of Bill 260.
More and more individuals who smoke, no longer smoke in their own
homes because of their concern for the health of their families. Yet this same
concern does not seem to translate to concern for others, including employees,
in the work place.
When the airlines banned smoking on airplanes, including in the
restrooms, there was no drop in the number of passengers forced to give up
smoking for short flights and long flights lasting many hours to protect the health
of airline employees and other passengers.
It's unfortunate that laws have to be passed to force smokers to be
considerate of others. However, we have seen counties, cities and states pass
law-after-law prohibiting smoking in workplaces because of the health risks to
others of secondhand smoke.
I care deeply for those individuals who presently are trapped into
breathing secondhand smoke because it is their job.
1 encourage you. for the sake of humanity, to pass Bill 260.
