My name is Ruby Ahlo-Ruiz, and I am a concernedd citizen who would like to share my
feelings about the proposed bill relating to smoking in public places.
I am in support of the proposed ordinance to protect nonsmoking employees and the
public from the hazards of secondhand smoke.
When I go to restaurants [feel that smelling cigarettes before walking into a place I pay
to eat, ruins my appetite to enjoy my meal. I don't feel safe taking my children to any
restaurants that allow smoking because of the smoke hazard. I care about the health of
my family and myself.
Two years ago my father suffered a few heart attacks and suffered through open heart
surgery. It has been a big challenge, even till today, with the care that we have to be
aware o£ When he was younger, there was no one to tell him the hazards about smoking
and what you will suffer in the long run.
Estimating cigarettes at $3.00 a pack, through my fathers life;
first 30 years
$3.00 a pack a day X 7 days = $ 21.00 a week
$21.00 X 4 weeks = $ 84.00 a month
$84.00 X 12 months (1 yr.) _ $ 1008.00 a year
008.00 x 1st 30 yrs. _ $ 30,240.00 over first 30 yrs.
2nd 30 years @ 2 packs a day ($4.50 a pack)
X 2 packs a day = $ 63.00 a week
$63.00 X 4 weeks = $ 252.00 a month
$252.00 X 12 months = $ 3,024.00 a year
$3,024.00 X 30 yrs. _ $ 90,720.00 over next 30 yrs.
Totalling all years my father smoked, he spent $120,960.00 over 60 yrs. of smoking
His (our) medical bills were approximately $500,000.00.
Who covers the cost of damage to employees working at a place that allows smoking?
Someone is making big bucks. Others are losing not only money, but their health too.
And their families are losing a loved, often the one who is the bread-winner of the family.
My father was only 7 years old when he experienced his first cigarette. He was 67 when
he experienced his first heart attack.
So please use this bill to "KICK BUTTS AT BUSINESS PLACES".
Smoking devastates and we must put a stop to all of this non sense. Please help!
