Re: Support of Bill 260-Relating to Smoke-free indoor workplaces
Aloha! My name is Kristen Suwa and I'm Tiffany Chang. We are representing
the East Hawaii 4-H Federation. We strongly support Bill 260 and ask that the
County Council pass this bill.
Asa 4-H member, we start off our meetings with the American and 4H flag
pledges. As part of our 4-H's we pledge to our Head, Heart, Hands, and Health.
We pledge to our Health for the better living for our club, our community, our
country, and our world.
Also, as teenagers, we have chosen to not smoke because we feel that our
heaRh is very important. Although, ff we go into a room with smoke, the air is
polluted, and we don't feel that we should be forced to breathe the second-hand
smoke.
We are concerned for everyone, especially children living in Hawaii. Second-
hand smoke is very harmful to us, and is more harmful than the smoke that
smokers inhale because it is not filtered. We feel concerned for the children
having to breathe the second-hand smoke in Hawaii because we have a high
rate of asthma. Second-hand smoke affects children with asthma more severely
than adults because they have smaller air passages. They can develop lung and
sinus problems. If it gets infected, it's really painful. Exposure can lead to
decreased lung function, and cause coughing and wheezing for young children.
Since the people who have asthma already suffer from the vog in Hawaii, we
don't feel that they should suffer more because of adults bad habits.
We urge the council to pass this bill. Thank you for your time and consideration
in this matter.
