Flawaii County Council RE: Bill 2(i0 - Rclatcd to Smoking in Certain Places. ~.~~airinan Holschuh and Committee Members; My name ix Toni Symons and 1 am here to testify in support of Bill 2G0. 1 have been a resident of Kona for over 3,5 years. i moved to Oahu to attend school and while thvvc got involves! with the Coalition and their efforts to puss Ief;islulion to protect the health of workers from the exposure to second hand smoke. i had a personal interest at the time. my daughter Caitlin. Shc began working al a restaurant in Honolulu while there arientling college. Caitlin was diagnosed with asthma when she was G ycan old. Shc struggled with it throughout ha youth, especially on days when the vog was bad. Shc went through a progvam at the lung association to team how to live with il. While working in lonolulu, the cigarette smoke seriously cornribuled to her illness, Often sho would come hon,c so sick and worn out from battling the smoke she couldn't make ii to school the next morning, Shc has Io work :a a waitress; it is the only job that tits her schedule, which is true 1'or many high school and college students. I am happy [o say that once the ban went into clTect T saw a dramatic change in her health. Hcr restaurant did not sec a drop in business (ovidenecJ by her work schedule onJ lips!). Caitlin will be rctummg to Kona this summer, as many ofour krds do during their college breaks. 1 do nut want her to have [o Choose between ajob and her hcahh, she shouldn't have too. Being employed in a restaurant or a bar is not a crime and it should not carry the death penally. Gds a voter, I depend on ;dl of you to make good decisions for our community. Pleasq make one now and pass this bill, for the sake of my daughter and all others in our County. ~-S~ccrciy, J ~ ~r-~-c. ~wti ""fom /inn Symons ~vi D~ r~~. 74-5 l48 Kialoa Pl.
