RT: Proposed Smoking Ban Bill
Dear Chairman Arakaki and all Council Members:
I am in favor of some type of no smoking ordinance, but I am opposed to limiting smoke
free hotel rooms to 80%. I feel that 50% to 60% smoke fret would be more reasonable
without hurting tourism. l also feel that smoking should be allowed in designated
sections of open-air restaurants and bars.
Secondly, I am opposed to anything that puts an added burden on our police department.
1 feel that there should be some form of"self policinb' to require the business
establishment where the violation occurs to ask the offending smoker to stop or leave the
premisses. Failure to do so (which 1 believe would be rare) could then revert to the police
being called to issue a citation with a fine attached.
I recommend that Hawaii County propose similar ordinances as Honolulu County and
the mainland.
