After carefully evaluating and assessing the duties of both departments, the Fire Commission, has voted unanimously not to support the recommendation of the Cost of Government Commission. Both the Fire and Police Commissions duties are to monitor the activities of the respective departments and it is felt that these differences may cause problems for one monitoring body. The Fire Department responds to tragedies with hazardous materials, business, home and brush fires, ocean rescues, etc. None of these are the responsibility of the Police Department. Finally, as a practical matter, doubling the workload of any commission will make it very difficult to find willing citizen/commissioners who are willing to devote the necessary amount of time to these activities. If there are further questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you.
