On May 6 the Hawaii County Council COMMITTEE 0 J anL~%~~lerices
and Economic Development , by a vote of B-1 ~ ~ ~~al'I~1l~liAll on

Businesses and the people that this new law would impact and took
it out of the arena of tree enterprise and forced upon all
another LAW.
Society has many problems that must be solved by servicing the
CAUSE, yet we continually try to elimenate them by LAW (servicing
the effect). Under the guise of "we know what is best for you"
trying to save us from ourselves. Authoritarian shades of "BIG
BROTHER" you bet.
One just has to turn on their TV to sae the great educational
adds aimed at bringing out the truth about "SMOKING" and that is
how a truly "Free Society" should solve it's Social Problems,
thro~yh EDUCATION not LAW.
The Hilo Lanes bowling ally representative said her patrons
overwhelmingly opposed the restrictions, but Council Member Joe
Reynolds spoke out saying when they turned their "Bowing Ally"
smoke free, very few left. But Joe the difference is you had the
right of choice, a rigrit you are taking from her. Don's Grill he
had a choice, Cronies Har & Grill they had a choice. That is what
"True Democracy" is all about. Let the owners decide let the
Patrons decide. And to all the "Smoke Free Crusaders" I say
PICKET, REMONSTRATE, EDUCATE, but don't allow the law to in#ringe
upon our Constitutional Civil Liberties any further.
As far as the other biq concern "WORK PLACE SAFETY", which both
Council Member Tyler and Leithead-Todd were so adamant about,
all I can say is that, under a "True Democracy", life is all
about chpices. The LAW takes that right, Your right of choice
away.
To all the Children and college students that were made part of
the "Well-Organized CAMPAIGN to support the measure." I say THINK
or you will soon find yourselves in a position where you won't
have to_ All you will have to do is "OBEY THE LAW".
To trie COUNCIL, your Committee On Human Services and Economic
Development is just that and it is your duty to serve all of this

that are using the LAW t0 eliminate a SOCIAL PROBLEM. Iri these
hard economic times it is your fob to keep the entire economy

passing laws that will destroy any portion of same. It is
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT NOT ECONOMIC DESTRUCTION.
