RE:: Written testimony and 'support of Bill 260, related to smoking in certain places in
the County of Hawaii, Wedn;~sday, June 18, 2003.
Dear Council Members,
A~+ a physician whose praetic)e is largely involved with the detection of cancer, I would
like to strongly support Bill .:~0. The war against cancer is a daily battle. As a
rariiologist, who Co-authorerj the [}iagnostic Standards for the Early Detection of Breast
Qmcer, I diagnose or evaluake onES or more cases of cancer every single day. Cancer
strikes many of us, stealing ~iway our family and friends. I lost my own father to a
malignancy.
There is almost nothing that: I cou d do in my entire career, which would have more of
an impact on cancer, then i1' your ~ouncil passes Bill 260. Not only will this prevent
fr,ture cancers in nonsmokers on the Big Island, it will also decrease the use of tobacco
among the smokers, who an' among your constituents. The reduced rate of cancer will
~ cult in the savings of many millicros of dollars for the Government of Hawaii in liio'
future, which would otherwi~;e be used to treat smoking related diseases
