RE: WRTfTEN TESTIMONY IN SUPPORT OF BII.L 260
Relating To Smoking In Certain Places In The County Of Hawaii
Wednesday, June 18> 2003
My name is Natti Rothfus and I am a Nutritionist at Hui Malama Ola Na `Oiwi and I
strongly support Bi11260 without exemptions.
Hui Malama Ola Na `Oiwi is a Native Hawaiian Health Cate System that promotes
healthy lifestyles for our clients and their `ohaua. We are committed to providing a
clean, safe and healthy working environment for our employees. Our Smoking Policy
states, "No smoking within 100 feet of building."
How does this bill affect us as an organization? Recent research continues to confirm the
harmful effects ofsecond-hand smoke and it appears short exposures times (i.e. being in
a smoko-Sllcd bar for 1 hour) may be just as bad as longer exposure times (i.e. an 8-hour
shift at a baz).
Some of our clients or their `ohana work in bazs and nightclubs. Many are non-smokers
who depend on the job to pay their rcpt. Personally, I and many of my friends simply
would like to enjoy a show at a bar/nightclub without having to inhale our neighbor's
smoke,
Thank you in advance for your consideration of my testimony.
