Testimony far Bill #2150 Regarding Smoke-i}ee Wvrkplace
AS a comtunity member of Last Hawaii, i' am writing to support the bill for
stttvke-free wvrk places. Researoh has clearly shown the health hr,ards of second-hand
smoke inhalation, including lung cattcer and other related aspiratory illnesses. As a
health care worker, 1 stn very aware ofthe impact of cigtuette smoke on smokers and
those around them. No emplpyce should be mibjecled to the secondhand smoke of
customers or cu-workors, nor should they have to choose their place of employment
accordingly,
work at a community heallh center, where at least !0% ofour employees smoke
Despite restrictions on designated smoking areas, employees and patients are regularly
subjec(ed tv the second-hand smoke ofrhese smokers. 1 am not only concerned about the
health implications, but also about the terrible itnage that this portrays.
As a health care provider, t urge my patients to quit smoking. How can they
accomplish this if they work in an environment where stttoking is the name (i.e. bars and
night ciubs)?
As other states have modeled, eliminating smoking m the workplace has been
gaod for business, bringing non-smoking customers back in Lct's create a safer,
healthier, and mare positive work environment by making all wank places smoke-free.
