KEN'S WILL BE `SMOKE FREE'
Honorable Chairperson and Council members,
We were very hesitant to post and advertise the sign above. Because we employ over 70 people, their
welfare in our hands, if this should turn out to be an error in judgment, the loss of business would impact
not only our restaurant, but the Iives of the families dependent on us. We first took a poll and then asked
their views and were very surprised to learn that even the `smokers' did not like having to work in a
`smoking environment'. Their voice's echoed a single consent to "Let's go `smoke free."
We all acknowledge the eatensive dangers of tobacco related illnesses and the costs put upon all
citizens and businesses, but most importantly "most importantly", although many of us will not be
around to see it's total impact, we now have a chance to better our communities by leaving our children
not only a safer environment but bestowing them with better health, lives and futures.
"Business & Family health", should be the issue. We understand the `cries' of some, but this decision
is so crucial it involves much more than just our `pockets.'
After eatensive review and research we decided it was time to act before the decision was mandatory.
The FACTS became verv anoarent quickly:
1. The `Thanks' received from customers and employees were overwhelming.
2. We now see new `local' clients because of our `smoke free environment'.
3. Our `quicker seating' ability has improved business.
4. And "Yes", our `s?noAing clientel' nre still cominr in.
In all, for us, a `family oriented' restaurant, it was far better for business than anticipated.
We ask you to please deepen the `business' issue and make your decision on what is best for our
communities and the health of our families and children. The `Big Islands' business and future, on a
broader plain, can only grow and gain from it. Mahalo!
Sincerely,~~ ~
