The deleterious effects of tobacco use and exposure~re we~~' documented and what the public needs is education and "prevention". Employees who do not use tobacco are subject to second hand smoke, which is potentially more harmful as secondhand smoke does not go through a filter. The effect of chronic tobacco exposure is along and insidious process, resulting in chronic disease or cancer. The effect on the society is a drain of scarce health resources and monies. We have repeatedly watched patients suffer dreadfully from this disease. In our practices, the ill effects of second hand smoke are evident in our pediatric patients as well. Secondhand smoke exposure exacerbates their asthma and causes chronic respiratory infections, resulting in pulmonary damage, loss of school time and possible tobacco use in the future. Additionally, those suffering from asthma and lung disease deserve protection from secondhand smoke. They should not be forced to avoid places because of those who choose to smoke. The effect of second hand smoke on employees in the restaurant and bar industry can cause serious and chronic pulmonazy disease as well. We see and treat young adults suffering with these ailments because of having to work and support themselves in environments thick with secondhand smoke. The public smoking ban tells our patients that we aze concerned for their health and are advocating prevention. It is the first step of many to control this terrible addiction.
